12 gauge "1901 No.12 Leader"

What is 1901?

Winchester 1901 was a model of shotgun (lever action). Winchester for several years used 1901 on the headstamp for it. It also denoted smokeless and not black powder was used.

It was a brand name & the shells were never (never say never…) factory loaded, So sold only as NPE,.

Were 1901 Repeater shot shells sold as loaded shells or primed empties like Leaders? I have 1 head stamped 1901
No 12
Repeater
Primer is brass & copper marked WRA Co NEW No 4 like the one shown on
Armourer Jim’s box . It has shorter brass then the Leaders.

Thanks Pete you are correct. I should have stated that made for the smokeless powder rather than blackpowder which was still the norm of this time period.

My Box is of 100 NPE shells…New Primed Empties.

cztrouba,
I think the 1901 Leader was also sold only as primed empties,
the later ones (not showing the 1901) were sold as loaded.
pics of both boxes attached.
