12G shotshell enquiry

#1

What made all these Western 12G Xpert shells pucker up? They are unfired. BB’s which fell out looked normal.

#2

Hydroexpansivity.

#3

My guess is that they got wet and the powder and wads swelled up.

#4

They look like old reloads. Way back when I used to get similar poor crimps using the old “Lee Loaders”.

Hammer

I like that word! Hydroexpansivity. ;) ;)

I agree with Rimfire - there’s more going on with those shells than hydroexpansivity (it is indeed a great word, and far more efficient than saying they got wet and the powder and wads swelled up). I think the shot would have oxidized if moisture was the problem. They look like reloads, especially with the spot in the center of the crimp where I suspect the stickers showing the shot size were originally affixed.
