1915 BROCK DART Anti-Zeppelin Incendiary Flechette

#1

I do not know a lot about this other then it is called a BROCK DART after its inventor and that it was hand released above Zeppelins. I did find an interesting document about it when its was submitted for approval to the Royal Flying Corps Technical Section.

It is right at 10 inches long

Things like this were also dropped from high altitude onto the enemy trenches, it was quite devastating.

The following is from eBay

Very rare and near mint example of an Ariel dart designed to be used as a counter measure against the Zeppelin airship. Designed by Cmdr F.A.Brock (Brock firework family). The weighted dart would have contained a phosphorus mix in the hollow centre tube section. This would have burned on contact with the air and was to be dropped from an aircraft above the Zeppelin. The item comes with a copy of an original Ministry of Munitions document from 1915 about initial tests on this dart. This is a near mint example and well marked “C.T.Brock SBZD” (special Brock Zeppelin dart) and "Patt B&F 1915"

A very interesting and historical object of importance, and of course, as a form of flechette, totally illegal in America’s version of the 4th Reich, California. Thanks for posting this. I was not being sarcastic about how interesting and historically important such an item is, especially when one knows (thanks to this forum) the meaning of the markings. One of the more interesting items on the forum in a long time, and that coming from a auto-pistol cartridge collector.

Thanks for the great info, Vlad, John and BD! Much appreciated! That link to BOCON has a link to a book that mentions, Brock and his inventions. Thank you BD. It turns out the he owned a firework manufacturing company and was also known for being the 1st to create the first firework display competitions world-wide :-)
