37 X 57R shell case

  • There is an Austrian made 37X57R rimmed brass shell case having these impressed headstamp markings (starting clockwise from 12 o’clock): “GR” (for “Georg Roth” - Austria), “589” (lot number ?), “1916” (year of shell case manufacture) and “S” (?). The shell case is very short (only about 57mm) and the head diameter is about 43.3mm. —> QUESTIONS: A) What is the exact meaning of the headstamp markings “589” and “S” ??? B) Was this 37X57R shell case for the 37mm Roth trench gun ??? If this is correct, I would like to know more about the 37mm Roth trench gun. Thanks in advance for any help, Liviu 02/28/11

Liviu, I don’t know the answer about the headstamp. The gun was the 3.7 cm Infanteriegeschütz M.15.
