.50 cal ammo box

When was this made/used?

I think it is WW2 era for use on aircraft, but I will defer to anexpert for positive ID. I have seen 3 or 4 of them over the years.

The M17 was just the standard .50 cal ammo box for ground use before the adoption of the M2 can in 1942. The similar M3 chest was made from linoleum lined aluminum and they are also often thought to be aircraft related. Also not true in that case as they were designed for cavalry use.

Did you just pick this up at the Clarence show?

I saw it Friday night and was wondering about it…
