A few days ago, we were asked to identify a cartridge, this one a .58 Remington Carbine. There are apparently several types of .58 rimfire cartridges, all appearing 1865-1870, intended to be used in the various conversions of US .58 caliber percussion rifled muskets. All are straight cases, and appear to vary in length and charge.
Transport yourself back in time to 1870. You are in Bannerman’s store and have purchased two of these rifles, each a different type. You need some cartridges. How will they be packaged and marked? To what degree will they be interchangeable?
