6.5 Lee Navy rifle

#1

I thought this rifle was only for the US Navy.
It was not also for commercial use ?

IIRC there were at least few sporter Winchester-Lee rifles in 6mm, not sure if these were converted from surplus Navy rifles or newly made. Have to check with the books, which are out of reach for now.

No, I am talking about 6.5 , the same rifle and caliber as issued to the navy, not converted surplus ones

Winchester Lee was only made in 6mm Lee cal.
WRA made 1784 original sporters.

I am with 6.5 instead of 6 mm on two posts !

The question I waswonbdering is : Were the rifles fisrt on the civilian market and then adopted by the Navy or is is the opposite ?

Rifle was designed by Lee, adopted by the USN and production contracted to Winchester. Sporting rifle production started after first USN contract was complete.
