7.62 x 51 XM276 dim tracer with green over white tip, LC 92

#1

A previous thread by AKMS made me remember a question I’ve been meaning to ask for some time. A couple of years ago I saw a 7.62 x 51 round with a green over white tip and an LC 92 headstamp which was identified as an XM276 dim tracer. I may be off by a year or so on the headstamp, but it was definitely from the early 90s.

I’m curious if anyone knows why this color code was used in the early 90s. My understanding is that this color code was used on XM276 rounds in the late 60s, but it was a marking error and it should have had a green over pink tip. Did they perhaps reload leftover mismarked projectiles in current cases?

Thanks in advance for any information!

Chip - I think that was part of a special lot made for Desert Storm. I found some dated 91 at a Dallas gun show (along with some very interesting other items). Presumably these would have been “dim ignition” tracers for issue to USAF gunships. Unfortunately I was not able to get the original box for these, just a handful of rounds.

And yes…the tip colors were not the proper pink-and-green from the Viet Nam era. IIRC, I bought several rounds with varying degrees of colors from white to light pink.

heh…If I had said “boo” to the guy I got them from I think he would have bolted the show hall…so if you own one, consider yourself lucky!

These probably wouldn’t have been for the AC-130 gunships. Only the AC-130As used the 7.62mm miniguns. The AC-130Hs which also date from Vietnam used 20mm, 40mm and 105mm. The smallest caliber on the new AC-130U gunships is 25mm and that is being modified to replace these guns with the 30mm GAU8.

No AC-130As were deployed to DS, only the H’s and perhaps the U’s (but I doubt it).

More likely is that they were made for the HH-53 rescue helios which use 7.62mm miniguns as door guns. They could have been made for Army or Marine helios too which also used 7.62mm weapons and fly with night vision goggles.

Cheers, Lew

folks…I hate bad photos as much as the next guy…but this photo is cropped from a huge photo of my entire drawer (I carry them to SLICS for back up inventory checks)…so I figure a “lousy” photo here is better than none…so he’s some nice 7.62 x 51 US “dim tracer” family members…and I love color so these are amoungst my fav’s
