7.9mm loadings and headstamps of yugoslavia

#1

Since some expressed an interest in another thread here are the headstamps and loadings I have or I am aware of. I hope I haven’t made too many mistakes preparing this list. I am a horrible typist!!

Post your additions and I will add them to the list

I always thought that this “Ф О” translated to “F N”, and was a Belgian contract for Yugoslavia?

#3

Jon

I think you have the earlier Belgian FN headstamp mixed up with the Yugoslav 1940-41 FO headstamps.

For more information see the IAA journal #453 page 14/15

Me…confused? Often.

Excellent thank you I will keep this for future reference, thank you very much that will be very useful.

Great List Phil - I will add to it soon if I can, although I won’t be able to do full cartridge weights.

A comment on the probability of the reports of “BT3” being found in 30 and 31 dates - almost nil!
Since the initials on these headstamps CXC, AT3 and BT3 represent nothing more than name changes of the same arsenal, I would doubt that BT3 would duplicate any date from AT3 except the highest one, “32.” The latter, as your list shows, is a fact and why not? Changes don’t all happen on new year’s day. Many happen mid-year, etc.

Just my opinion, strengthened by the fact that i have never seen a BT3 headstamp from 1930 or 1931.

I think the list should stick to confirmed headstamps and loads.

Boy - from only my notes, that was harder to do than I thought. I have not yet done the “nny” headstamps. They will have to wait until later, as have places to go. Excuse me if I duplicate any of my own entries, or show one that is already on the list. Here is what i have that I didn’t find on the list. I have included the FN contract for Yugoslavia, since we know they headstamp was for them. It is possible at least one load, a sporting one, was simply an FN sporting load using up extra brass, but I have included it anyway. “IO” represents the Cyrillic letter “F” which I cannot duplicate here. (Edited by Ron Merchant to use the Cyrillic Letters)

ф H 24, 25 and 26 - Ball CNCS, Blue primer seal
ф H 24, 25 and 26 - Blank, Natural color wood point bullet, No primer seal - loaded in Yugoslavia
ф H 24 - Ball CNCS, no primer seal
ф H 24 - Ball, FP GMCS with copper ball in tip, no primer seal
ф H 24 and 26 - Ball, GMCS, Green primer seal, 3-sdtab primer crimp
ф H 25 - Ball CNCS, black primer seal, 3-stab primer crimp

MITCHELL 8MM MAUSER - Four loadings, all made by PPU for Mitchell’s Mausers Co.
Ball GM, 198 grain, green primer seal
Ball GM, 198 grain “Swat”, violet primer seal (probably the “Sniper Ball” load)
Ball GM, 175 grain Spitzer HPBT bullet, green primer seal
Ball GM, 175 grain Pointed Soft Point
All of the above first advertised, and acquired by me, in 2002

AT3 30 - Ball GM, Green primer seal
BT3 39 - GMCS bullet, vilet primer seal

  • 11 * 48 - GMCS bullet, violet primer seal
  • 11 * 48 - ALSO DATES 50 AND 52 - dummy, GMCS bullet, case red plastic filled with 6 holes,
bullet has 1 tiny anchor hole showing red plastic, primer pocket filled with red plastic
  • 11 * 54 - STEEL CASE (no added headstamp markings for “steel”) - GM bullet, violet pr seal
  • 11 * 54 - ALSO DATES 55 AND 56 - GMCS bullet, violet primer seal, odd, 4 semi-circular primer
    crimps.
  • 11 * 48 - Blank, natural wood pointed bullet, double set of primer crimps (6)
  • 11 * 55 - AP (?) Yellow Tip GMCS bullet, four semi-circular primer crimps
  • 11 * 48 - ALSO DATES 49 AND 51 - Blank, Natural wood bullet, 3-stab primer crimps
  • 11 * 55 - Black Tip GMCS bullet, AP-T - probably German bullet - Green mouth seal, black pr
    seal, four semi-circular primer crimps
  • 12 * 54 - Ball, GM bullet, violet primer seal, ring-type primer crimp (like US .30-06)
  • 12 * 54 - Ball, GM bullet, green primer seal

и к 1958 - Ball, GM bullet, green primer seal only, no other seals or colored markings, 3-stab pr
crimps
и к 1971 - Ball, GM bullet, violet primer seal - very small headstamp letters
68 - Date only - Dummy, red plastic filled as previously described
59 - Date only - Ball, GM bullet with violet primer seal

KAL.7.9mm PP-YU - Lacquered Steel Case, Blank, pointed plain wood bullet
KAL.7.9mm PP-YU - Ball, GM bullet, violet primer seal
PPU 8 x 57 JS - Ball, GMa SPRN bullet with one knurled cannelure on bullet, green primer seal

NOTES: In “N K” headstamps, the “N” appears backward (Cyrillic letter “I”) (Edited by Ron Merchant to use the Cyrillic Letters)

Phil - in your entry for * 11 * 55 APTO, you have an extra word "Black" after the word "Tip" which could confuse some people. Just a typo, I think.

When I say a "violet" primer seal, I am talking about any shade of purple other than the Reddish-orange primer seals that appear on nny-headstamped rounds, for the most part.

I will try to do the nny headstamps later.

Phil and John, thanks a lot for your work. Very interesting cartridges there are.

Maybe I did not find them in your list but you may ad:

These exists as dummies with red plastic inside and holes drilled:
59….Ball M49…GM bullet…Violet red annulus…clandestine “SIFRA 127”

  • 11 * 48
  • 11 * 50

And then there are dummies made of life cartridges. They have popped primers (one with missing primer, probably just blown out). 4 holes in the case (not 100% evenly distributed) and the case necks have v-shaped cuts (likely filed in with triangular file) and then filled up with solder to secure the projectile. I have never seen such ones elsewhere. The hs are:

  • 11 * 50
  • 11 * 51
  • 11 * 51 with blown out primer
  • 11 * 53

What is the hs of those plastic filled dummies which have a black (or the like) filler instead of red? I did not see it listed here (or missed it…).

#9

O.k. Back from the medical building, so on with the list. These are all “nny” headstamps. On the Phil’s list are some dummies shown with fairly early dates and red-orange plastic fillers. Unless I say a color, all the dummies I list are red fillers - a true red, with no orange tint to it. I bring this to attention since I believe one duplicates a date on the original list shown with a red-orange filler.

These are pretty mixed up, but my catalog system doesn’t make putting them all in “date order” very easy to do.

nny headstamps:

1960 - Ball, GM bullet, violet primer seal.
1961 - Ball, GM bullet, violet primer seal

1985 - Proof load, GM bullet with black tip, primer all black-lacquered. I note on original list there is one of the same date with orange-sealed primer. That is not worrisome. Both black and orange also appear on proof loads, in this case made for Ruger, in 7.62 x 39 mm

1971 - NUPE case

1982 - Ball, Spitzer GM Soft Point, Green Primer seal

nny 8 x 57 - Spitzer FMJ GM bullet, green primer seal, 175 grain bullet

nny 8 x 57JS - Dummy, SP RN GM bullet with 1 knurled cannelure, green primer seal, snapped primer, no powder - 1988 SHOT Show
nny 8 x 57JS - Dummy, SP RN GM bullet with 1 knurled cannelure, green primer seal, on hole in case, round (concave) primer cup
nny 8 x 57JS - Ball, Point SP GM bullet, green primer seal.

I have four mortar igniters, but have left them alone, as obviously some duplicate the original list, but the way I have them described, I can’t match them up.

I also have other Yugo-loaded, blank 7.9 x 57 mm cartridges with plain, pointed wood bullet, but loaded on older, non-Yugo cases. Perfectly legitimate, but probably of no use listed by headstamp here. I did list the same load by headstamp if they were in Yugoslav cases.

All I have to offer. Note, all listed rounds in both my responses are ones I could not find on the list that are in my collection. They do not represent every round in my collection, so there should not be a lot of duplication.

I have:
nny 1962 dummy, red plastic filled
I did not see it on the list.

I can add a steel-cased Dummy headstamped ‘nny 1973’. The case has no finish to it, no primer, and no holes drilled in it.

#12

Without finish, that “dummy round” sounds like a case draw piece (finished case short only of lacquering) with a bullet put into it. It is not a standard Yugo dummy, to my knowledge, although it could also be some sort of trade show giveaway. They usually would be in a completely finished, lacquered case though. to show the type of finish they supply steel cases with.

Dummies only, all with the typical red plastic filler.

  • 11 * 55
    nny 1963
    PP-63 Cal 7.9mm
    nny 1977
    nny 1978

It all goes to show how little I know and how much there is to be known.

Happy collecting, Peter

John, you listed this one:

1967 - Blank, brass case, gray plastic RN bullet

Are you sure it is a blank? Is there any way you show it to us?

#15

EOD - I suppose it could be a short range, I just don’t know. I assumed it was a blank. It is as I described it. Picture will be posted here by my Pard Joe, when he gets a chance to do it.
It is already taken and sent to him.

EOD et al - here is a picture of the round in question. The case is brass, the projectile grey plastic, the primer is a domed, brass cup with the dark red/wine colored seal, some call purple or violet, of all of the earlier Prvi Partizan loads. The round has never been tampered with that I can see, and is certainly not a reloaded case.

Just to be “picky”, the address for PP after the formation of the Republic of Serbia ( following the downfall of “Yugoslavia” as a formal state) the Town’s name “Titovo Uzice” reverted to its pre-1945 name, simply “Uzice”…the “Titovo ( “of Tito”) being dropped. Uzice is, in slavic pronunciation, " Usit-se” ( the latinised “c” in slavic is pronounced “ts”).

Thanks for the extensive and well researched lit of HS.
