7X57 with a slit bullet

This appears to be a 7x57 Mauser with a headstamp: 5 96 P. It has a cross-slit bullet tip. Why?

I think somebody “modified” that for hunting use. Too bad, it’s a very good 7x57 headstamp.

And potentially dangerous. If the nose is weakened enough, the core could shoot directly through the jacket leaving the jacket lodged in the bore.

But I’m sure you have no intention of shooting it. After WW II, surplus ammunition became available and the factories still hadn’t caught up with the demand for hunting cartridges so a few guys hollow-pointed GI '06 ammo. It usually worked but it only takes one jacket in the bore for a KLABLOOEY!

It is an interesting addition to a collection. I have a couple of different ones myself.
