As some of you know from previous posts, I have been doing some work on DWM Navy boxes. As I was going over my material, I realized that I didn’t have any early DWM Army boxes (photo below is an Army format box). My earliest Army box by DWM is February 1917. I have never documented an Army DWM box from before WWI (or early WWI) even though I have Spandau boxes as early as 1910.
I checked the dates on my DWM cases in the collection and from my notes (those with *)
1909 months 4*, 5, 6, 7, 8 1910 months 3*, 4*, 5*, 6*, 7, 8, 9, 10* 1911 months 2, 3, 4 5, 7, 11 1912 months 1, 2, 5, 8 1913 months 3, 8 1914 months 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 1915 months 1, 9 1916 months 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 1917 months 1 through 12 1918 months 1 through 10 (except 4)
The Germany Army converted to the RN bullet in mid-1916 and probably accelerated (initiated) their procurement from of 9mm from DWM about that time. The numbers above make me wonder if all DWM production through early 1916 may have been for the German Navy.
Does anyone have a DWM box in the Army format (illustrated above) that dates from mid-1916 or earlier. Actually I’d appreciate image of any 1916 DWM box label.
This is just speculation on my part, based on the boxes and cases I have or have documented. Any information that contradicts this speculation (of perhaps supports it) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to this great Forum, and the moderators who keep it running, there is a place to ask these questions. A far cry from when I use to try to do this kind of research by writing letters and making phone calls. My appreciation to all of you for making this available to us.
edited to include three more 1910 months of case production. Any more additions
