Early Yugoslavian headstamp origins

#1

Hello, i have a rather simple question to pose. What is the origin of the 11, star, year, star and 12 star, year, star headstamps found on the earlier M49 YUgoslavian ammunition? Basicly what factory was 11 and what factory was 12? where there more? Also, what about the cyrill ‘nr’ over date headstamp? What all did they produce. i have some Yugo 8mm from the earlier times and was wondering about the headstamps. When did the yugoslavians stop using the star style headstamps and go to the factory over date format?

When you say "cyrill ‘nr’ ", do you mean “HXP”?

#4

No Vlad, that’s a Greek headstamp.
The nr is Cyrillic for PG, Pobjeda Gorazde, Bosnia-Herz.
We also need to include 14, also Prvi Partizan.
For Yugo 7.62x25, we have known:
11 * 50 * to 11 * 56 * (I am missing 51, 52, 54)
14 * 54 * to 14 * 56 * (I have all 3)
nr 1956 to nr 1975 (I am missing 56, 67, 69, 73)
nny 1957 to nny 2001 (I have 57, 62, 63, 75, 77-84, 86-88, 92, 01)
PPU 1964 and PPU 1967 (I have both)

Finally, the Living Proof that American shooters and some collectors have got it horribly wrong for over 100 years…The Yugoslav ( and now Serbian and Bosnian) production of the 7,9x57 cartridge Correctly differentiates between “7,9” mm for the Military (FMJ) cartridge and “8x57JS” for the Sporting ( ie, soft point etc) Cartridge…KISS, no???

Now is the time to Change your ways…shooters…and Milsurp Rifle collectors
( we KNOW that serious (Cartridge) collectors have always known the difference…).

( to me, an “8mm Mauser” is the Siamese 8x50R or 8x52R!!! and of course, a “generic” 8mm Ammo could be anything from 8mm Lebel, thru the Austrian Mannlicher cartridges, the Siamese, the Danish, Breda MG, Swede BMG, and of course, the Commercial sporting ammo and Rimmed drilling ammo…but never, ever the Patrone 88 or Patrone 7,9 “s”…).

Thanks for the extensive Yugoslav (et al) HS Listing. Has anybody got every one of those? (or even close?)

#9

Alex, the info I have says it’s a Prvi Partizan headstamp.

#10

This is what was puzzling me all the time. That would mean PPU used two different codes at the same time. Is that just a very unusual fact or a mistake somewhere?

#11

It was used for only a short time, perhaps a small satellite factory run by Prvi.

#12

Hello,

what do you think of that 7.9 ? I would guess it has a Yugoslavian “taste” but did not find this headstamp in the checklist.

Any idea ?

Cheers,

Doc - regarding designations for the military cartridge we generally know as “7.9 x 57” or “7.92 x 57” Mauser, based on the uning countries’ designations, “NEVER SAY NEVER.”

The official Swedish designation for this cartridge was “8 mm Skarpa Patroner m/39” and used primarily in the Czech Brno LMG which was designated “Kulsprutegevär m/39 (Typ Brünn)” in Sweden. This caliber designation of “8 mm” was used even though when referring to the caliber of the barrel, the manual “Särtryck us Truppslagens Soldat-Instruktioner 1941,” when discussing the caliber of the barrel, mentions it is 7.92 mm. (“Pipan har en kaliber av 7.92 mm…”)

Wall chart “8 mm Ammunition, Plansch 42” also designates the 7.9 Mauser, showing Czech “Z” and “SB” headstamps, as the cartridge “8 mm sk ptr m/39.”

This is why I am not too dogmatic about cartridge designations. They vary from country to country. I just happened to remember that Sweden designated the 7.9 x 57 as “8 mm.” There may be others that did as well, I simply don’t recall.

One can say Sweden was right or wrong, but the fact remains it called the military loading 8 mm as an OFFICIAL DESIGNATION.

I’m going slightly out on a limb in posting this, but I believe that Maxim 08 machine guns procured by the German navy pre-1919 were marked as being of 8 m/m caliber. Jack

Please allow me to add the below listed, all came from a sealed 15 rd box dated 1970 w/ nomenclature of M 54 on the label, all cases (Steel),were highly polished. After I have done some reading and guessing and talked back to others there might be a way that this round with hs “VI” (in Latin) is made by “’'Višegradska Industrija Inž. Stanković AD” which is better known as “Krusik” in Valievo today.
Any thoughts on that or anybody to confirm?

#17

Here is a link to the site of this company and it’s history in English

This is actually only the recently split off hunting cartridge factory. The real company as it was founded is this:

Thank you for the id of that Yugo round by 'Višegradska Industrija Inž. Stanković AD"

Which are other years known besides that 1940 ? It might be worth adding that headstamp to the Yugo headstamp checklist.
