Very interesting post. My father was on a British Destroyer escorting these ships across the Atlantic. Very dangerous times. He loved NY but never went back after the war.
The ship was moored at Cavan point pier NJ.
The Port Chicago CA bang in 1944 was felt and heard where I live 30 miles further inland. The area has now been completely cleared of houses as the Navy still has a magazine there. A train load of munitions bound there from Nevada was set off by a "hot box"in the rail yards of Sacramento a few years back causing a nice fireworks display but no seriuos damage.
