Eley Tropical Loads

#1

While looking though the 1907-08 Eley catalog, I found the answer to something I had noted some years ago, but did not know the answer to. I had noted some of my .577 Nitro Express 3" and 2 3/4" rounds which seemed to have the same bullet were different weights. According to the catalog, Eley made “Standard” loads for shooting at about 60 degrees F. and “Tropical” loads with a smaller Cordite charge for shooting at 120 degrees F. This was done to regulate the ballistics so the point of aim would be the same at the two different temperatures. For example, the .577 3" Standard, had 100grs of Cordite while the Tropical load was only 93grs.

So, the question of how to tell them apart, once out of the wrapper, is to weigh them. Does anyone have a list of the “Standard” vs. “Tropical” complete round weights for the various rounds that Eley made in both loads?

I have been getting a fair amount of email concerning this question, but I see no one has posted any follow up. Here is a list, based on the Eley 1907-08 catalog. If anyone knows of any other calibers that were specifically made in both Standard and Tropical loadings (not counting all the German 7.9’s), please let me know. The practice by Eley seems to be limited to cartridges for the big English Double Rifles for which the two barrels were regulated at the factory to fire to the same point of aim. I have received an email from Bill Fleming, author of British Sporting Rifle Cartridges. He sent me a list of British loads and some cartridge weights. I suspect most of the needed information is in his book. As soon as I have a chance to go though it, I will publish as complete a list of weights as I can.
