George Egestorff Salesman Sample Set

Picked this up on eBay. Never seen one before by him!

What are all the rifle cartridges on the bottom? Is there any reference card for this anyone has seen? Any of these extra rare? There are some really nice headstamps on some of them.

Great set, very, very nice, probably after the turn of the century I’d guess. Are the rifle cartridges on the left side copper washed steel?
The numbers 1=11 you list seem to be the case types noting caliber & length 9,3x72 R mm for example is #1 Although number 6 certainly isn’t an 11mm so I don’t know. #8 looks like a .577/.450 Martini Henry.

As to rarity it’s hard to say with out seeing the headstamp but I doubt the case types by themselves are.

Be a shame to break it up.

The two ‘modern’ looking military rifle cartridges look like the 7.65 m/m Mauser and the .303 British to me.Jack

Aaron, wonderful set! I’m glad that you won the auction, now it’s in good hands.

After looking at some Egestorff catalogs, it seems that the rifle cartridges are:

  1. 9372 [e] = 9.3x72R E Express*
  2. 9370 [e] = 9.3x70R E Express*
  3. 9357 = 9.3x57R D Express
  4. 8057 = 8x57R Express
  5. 11857 [or] = 8x57 (J)
  6. 11857 [mr] = 8x57R (JR)
  7. 11160 = 11.15x60R
  8. 11659 = .577/.450 M-H
  9. 11551 = 11x50R Beaumont
  10. 11852 = 11.15x52R LK
  11. 8146 = 8.15x46R Normal

*Could be a D type, but hard to tell without detailed measurements.

Thanks.

Did they use shortened product codes like this in catalogs or price list?

Yes, this was the Egestorff numbering system, that also included handgun cartridges and metallic shotshells.

Here are my notes on the Egestorff Case numbering system - I haven’t updated this list for a few years so there may be a few additions ?

The firm of LINDENER ZUNDHUTCHEN UND THONWAREN-FABRIK VORMALS GEORG EGESTORFF used a case numbering system but unlike DWM and Roth never stamped the case numbers on the base. To distinguish between different case types for the same caliber it would either change the code or add letters to classify them uniquely (egs. 11028 and 13028 for 11x28R, 8042 and 8042 MBb for 8x42R). Egestorff rarely showed calibers on cases (generally only on some export types such as the 44 Winchester) but used proprietary hs and the early “L III 1879” style hs sometimes attributed to Lindener (they did use L on later calibers) is now believed to be manufactured by Lorenz.

What a fantastic box!
However, as a German businessman, even in America, ‘Hanover’ with one -n- would cause me a hearth-attack.

the old german writing and also the english version of Hannover was or is only with 1 “n” in the word…
see here: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanover

Can anyone come up with a close date for this display?

Do the ones on the left take a magnet?

I am surprised this was allowed on evilbay, as they have pulled UN-primed brass, and pre-1890 rimfire rounds, within the past year.
California rules…

I too am surprised fleabay allowed it. A friend recently got his account thrown into fleabay jail for 3 days for posting some unprimed brass.

I’m not a linguist.
However, this fragment comes out “Schuss und Waffe”, number 17 of 1908, page 419:

“Ich schiesse aus dieser Pistole mit der Zentralhülse 11,2 x 32,5 Nr.11232 von Georg Egestroff-Linden bei Hannover das Geschoss Nr. 69 und lade 1,5 g Nassbrandpulver.”

Sorry I can’t provide in the link. Schuss und Waffe year 1907-08 is free available on the site of the library of the University of Chicago. It is very interesting matter.
It would not surprise me Hanover is the American name for Hannover. Even then, as a Geman, I should be horrified: Hanover with one -n- in gothic-like letters looks like a huge anachronism. But that’ s of course my own opinion.

Here is a book from 1884 written about how to speak German by a professor of the German language named George Egestorff and he says he is from Hanover.

There’s a 1000 other Google Books references to hanover with one n as well

https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&q=George+egestorff+hanover

All of my boxes have two n’s

image image image image image

silly me but I’ll ask a third time, do the rifle cases on the left take a magnet?

Aaron: The book was published in 1842, so maybe the ‘professor of the German language’ was the cartridge maker’s old daddy. Jack
