Just to keep this thread going I would like to add an observation. A lot of these old powder boxes were tiny and the powder within hardly enough for a mornings shooting.
If the one in the picture is anything to go by, its a quarter of a Kg yet it shows shotgun cartridges in the outside. A whole pound of BP is only enough for 100 shotgun (12 ga 3 dram) cartridges. (barely) A 1/4 of a Kg would go nowhere.
The size is not uncommon. To me it shows how frugal life was in those days. I can burn a pound or more of BP in a morning with no problem. Just an observation.
