In addition to the forward momentum, centifical force due to the spinning of the projectile also helped to disperse the shrapnel.
One of the greatest things about the Shrapnel shells is that the projectile itself did not burst and it leaves most of the components intact for recovery and reconstruction by cartridge collectors, like me. Here’s a photo of a US Navy 3 inch Shrapnel round that I rebuilt.
