AMMUNITION: ITS HISTORY, DEVELOPMENT AND USE 1600-1943, 22 CB cap to 40mm –
by Melvin M. Johnson and Charles Haven - 374 pages 6.5” x 9.5” hardbound with excellent dustjacket. First 1943 edition. This is the Melvin M. Johnson of Johnson rifle, as well as being a significant study on its technical merits. This book traces the development of ammunition from the beginning of the paper musket cartridge to the present day. It covers both early and modern pistol or revolver cartridges including foreign as well as American sporting and military cartridges, and includes a discussion of the larger type of fixed ammunition- the .50 caliber, 20mm., 37mm. and 40mm. shells and cartridges used in aircraft, anti-aircraft and anti-tank cannon. There is much useful information which will help the reader to understand the functioning of ammunition and its stoppages in the field, plus very clear discussions of ballistics, sights, etc. Printed on cheap wartime high-acid paper which is yellowing and becoming brittle, but still as nice a copy of this classic as you are likely to find.
