New toys and a couple of questions

Just finished a bullet run yesterday, got some nice new toys and a couple of question marks. Best toy of the day is a nicely marked 175mm. I’ve always had a fondness for the 175s, and they seem to be the hardest to find.

Along with large and mid calibers I found a couple of small pieces as well, two which have me a bit puzzled. The first is described as a kiln or industrial cartridge, of a type I’ve never seen before. I know that there are a lot of variations out there, can anyone confirm?
They second I have no idea. A fellow member has some theories and is certain he has seen either a thread or an article on it, but I’m having troubles accepting some of his recollections. Maybe someone can fill in some blanks? Markings on the base are "PATD Dec 8 1931, PAT PEND, Peters. Thanks in advance, JO

Exactly as described. Does anyone know if any information was found? It doesn’t seem like it would be effective noting the difficulties faced by explosive perforators used for the same purpose.
