I recently acquired an original page from Brigadier General John T. Pitman, Jr’s notes on his collection of US service arms and ammunition, published as The Pitman Notes on U.S. Martial Small Arms and Ammunition, 1776-1933.
This page has his hand drawn samples of pinfire cartridges used, with very precise drawing to scale with exact sizes and weights of components. It also contains a rare label (pasted on top of an accurately drawn box) of one of the 3 US cartridge companies that provided pinfire cartridges during the US Civil War. These were made by Allen & Wheelock by contract with W.P. Wilstach who contracted with the US Ordinance Department. The sectioned cartridge and two whole cartridges pictured should be in one of the 100 drawers of his collection he donated to the United States Ordinance Museum at West Point.
