Pinfire: The Picture Book

Should I make this book?

  • Yes, it seems like a neat idea.
  • No, that’s dumb.
  • Other.

So I have been considering making a book, just for the fun of it. Some day in the future I can envision myself making a truly informative book on pinfire cartridges, but that is not this book.

This book will be mainly a full-color, larger-than-life, picture book showcasing unique guns and cartridges from mainly my collection. I envision it having short articles opposite each page with easy to understand information relative to the particular image. It would be a coffee table type book, where someone with no idea about pinfire cartridges could pick it up and get a good understanding of them, without needing too much detail. I would make it creative enough where it would be enjoyable enough for the every-day person with a general interest in guns or ammo to want to look through it all, without feeling like he is reading an authoritative text book. I would shoot for about 50+ pages.

I plan on using the excellent online on-demand publisher, http://www.blurb.com, to print it. It is relatively inexpensive, and the same price per book to print 1 or 1000.

I made a few quick, rough examples of what some of the inside pages may look like:

Aaron - if the book will be in color then Yes - definitely. I find that there has been a distinct lack of color photo books over the whole spectrum of ammunition collector & reference books. Sometimes it is because color is irrelevant, and sometimes it is due to cost. But in any case, I think everybody loves a good color book with high resolution. It brings out all the details and shows the difference in metal types, paper, shading, etc… I know I would be willing to pay the extra for a color pinfire book, and I don’t even collect pinfires.

This should be a very nice volume to use in conjunction withthe book “The Pinfire System,” by Gene Smith and Chris Curtis, for those interested in pinfires. However, I am equally sure it will stand alone as a general survey of the pinfire system for pinfire specialists and students of ammunition in gerneral, alike.

This would certainly be a good idea.

For some reason I can’t seem to view the sample pages in large size. I am not sure if it is the site hosting them or something at my end (my computer, browser etc.). I would like to see some readable versions of them.

Falcon, they are just mock-ups, there is no real text. Actual version will have some readable samples, and be more polished. These are just to give an idea of the look I am going for with this book.
