Remington nickle primers

#1

Apologies up front if this has been covered previously…

The 1923 Remington catalog (thanks Ron Merchant) shows the availability of nickle primers, can any one offer an earlier date ?

SOME CALIBER .30 (KRAG) CARTRIDGES MANUFACTURED ON CONTRACT IN 1917 AND 1918 HAD NICKELED PRIMER CUPS. HEADSTAMP WAS RA 17 AND RA 18. THE PRIMER CUPS WERE STAMPED WITH THE LETTER “R” WHICH INDICATED A REVISED PRIMER. HOWEVER, COPPER PRIMER CUPS WERE USED TO LOAD THE VAST MAJORITY OF THESE CARTRIDGES.

Scott, regarding commercial ammunition, these are mentioned as new products in a Remington ad dated December, 1922. Full description says: “New Remington Nickeled Primer. Faster Ignition. A great forward step doing away with corrosion, chemical action of fulminate, punctured primers, blow-outs and gas-leaks”. Also, another ad published on October 21, 1922 mentions that Remington is “modestly proud” of having invented the first nickeled primer.

If you consider military ammunition, you can also find nickeled primers in .30 Pedersen and .30-18 rounds from 1918-19, for example.

Based on the late dates of Fede’s ads, it appears the 1923 catalog is the earliest published data.
