SPEER Manufacture Dates

#1

Previously, I reported the Speer/CCI/BLAZER lot number system back to 1995 - year A. I also had pre-1995 boxes with the same lot number arrangement. That should have meant that the system repeated itself starting in 1995. The question was: did they skip letters as in the 1995-present system? According to my Speer #8 reloading manual (copyright 1970) “The company entered the loaded ammunition business in 1967” in partnership with DWM. “In 1969, loading operations began at the Lewiston, Idaho, plant” of 38 Special and 357 Magnum cartridges. There is now enough evidence to say it began in 1970, meaning the 1970-1994 lot numbers only skipped I, but not O. It also means that the 1969 – first year’s – production of 38 Special and 357 Magnum cartridges, packaged in a plastic box pictured in the Speer manual, will have a distinctly different lot number, presumably like the pre-1970 CCI primer lot numbers which are all numbers. Anybody have early Speer 38/357 ammo boxes with an all number lot number? Anyway, their lot numbers from 1970-present are month-date-year-production line format:
Month:
A = January
B = February
C = March
D = April
E = May
F = June
G = July
H = August
I is skipped, presumably because it looks like a 1
J = September
K = October
L = November
M = December
Date: 01-31
Year:
A = 1970 1995
B = 1971 1996
C = 1972 1997
D = 1973 1998
E = 1974 1999
F = 1975 2000
G = 1976 2001
H = 1977 2002
I skipped
J = 1978 2003
K = 1979 2004
L = 1980 2005
M = 1981 2006
N = 1982 2007
O = 1983 but skipped in 2008
P = 1984 2008
Q = 1985 2009
R = 1986 2010
S = 1987
T = 1988
U = 1989
V = 1990
W = 1991
X = 1992
Y = 1993
Z = 1994
Production Line: haven’t got a good handle on this yet, and it recently changed/expanded. Can be a single number or pair of numbers, a single letter or letter and single or pair of numbers.
It is interesting to note that Blazer aluminum case ammo production, again in 38 Special and 357 Magnum, began in 1982. As luck would have it, I just happen to have an old Blazer 38 Special box lot number M16N1 – 16 December 1982.

Forum members’ keen minds found flaws in my breakout of the 1970-1994 Speer lot number equations. I made mistakes. My previous entry has been edited to correct those mistakes.
