Unusual 4 gage case

Here is a fired 4 gage case that has an unusual headstamp and finish.

The headstamp is tough to see, but it is a hexagon with three smaller hexagons inside

Any ideas on the maker or application of this item?

This is a German WWI made AEG case.

I also have one of these but in plain brass. I believe the plating was added later to turn the case into an ornament. I have read online before that nickel plating was popular in the 1920s and 30s.

Thanks for the great information.
