Vitterli question

What was the purpose of wax paper between shell and bullet in 10x38R Vitterli mod.1966? Was it lubrication or something internal? Thanks.

The paper on the cartridge is a paper patch.
Its purpose was to keep the lead bullet from touching the rifling, thus the bullet can be shot at relativly high velocity (for the 1870’s that is!) with out leading up the bore.
