Jo,
I think it’s a M82 Percussion Primer.

I only have the red painted crimp.
Is the gray crimp different for the 155mm Howitzer?

Thanks guys that‘s it!
As usual quick and explains everything

Good question but I don’t have an answer. Here is a reference list of TM’s that are supposed to have specific information concerning the M82 primer (TM’s I do not have) that may or may not answer your question:

Correct me if I am wrong but these primers are only used to ignite bagged charges.
Fixed ammunition uses the primer in the base of the cartridge case.

Ron,

You are correct; which makes my statement about top closure color, above, incorrect! My statement has now been removed so as to eliminate possible confusion on the subject.

Thanks,

Brian
